Progress Monitoring
West Midlands has seen a statistically significant increase in participation of 36,000 participants, to 665,000 adults in the region participating in at least three sessions of sport and active recreation per week. The percentage of adults reporting sedentary behaviour in the region (0 x 30 minutes of sport and active recreation per week) has decreased from 53.8% (Active People Survey 1 2005/06) to 51.4% in 2007/08. This suggests that the organisations in the region involved in driving up participation levels in sport and physical activity are making real progress in shifting the curve of participation.
The West Midlands has seen a significant increase in participation in sport and active recreation between 2007/08 and 2008/09 from 19.1% of the adult population achieving 3 x 30 minutes of sport and active recreation to 20.1% compared with the national average of 21.5% (KPI 1 Active People Survey 3). However, the West Midlands still has the lowest participation rate in sport and active recreation out of all of the English regions.
The 2008 Health Survey for England data shows that 37% of men and 25% of women in the region are meeting the recommended levels of physical activity (5 x 30 minutes per week). Only 32% of buys and 22% of girls in the region are meeting the recommended levels of physical activity for children and young people (60 minutes of moderate activity every day).
